The PMI and College of Performance Management Split
On 27th January 2012, after more than 12 years, members of the EVM Community of Practice (CoP) at the Project Management Institute (PMI) were notified by email that the PMI and the College of Performance Management have agreed to separate. The EVM Community of Practice was restructured only last January 2011, previously called the PMI’s College of Performance, with a goal of providing Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) on Earned Value Management (EVM) to the PMBOK (Project Management Book Of Knowledge).
The events behind this agreement to split were driven by changes initiated by the PMI to restructure the Special Interest Groups (SIG’s) and Colleges into Communities of Practices. The goal is to offer members a more consistent interaction and experience.
This news is being positioned as positive allowing both organizations the ability to better serve their members. We expect more formal announcements to be made in the coming days. Ironically, this split follows previous statements emphasizing the fact “that EVM was no longer a standalone focus but was the integrating factor for project management”.
It is estimated that the PMI membership is over 415,000 people worldwide. The resulting split will give the EVM CoP an estimated 1,500 members.
